Sorry to start with a weather report yet again...actually, if you remember those Queensland tourist ads from the 80s ("beautiful one day, perfect the next") then I probably don't need to bother anymore...suffice to say, so far we have been very, very lucky.
Everywhere we have walked has been fascinating in its own way and again today reveals more of the complex interwoven narrative that is Rome. We emerge from one narrow street and there is the monumental and imposing circular structure of Castel Sant Angelo, yet glance upwards on any street corner and there is likely to be some tiny (by comparison) ancient architectural detail or decorative flourish that is equally compelling...and all around modern Rome jumps and hums with the sound of car horns and people rush about their business while others stand idly at counters drinking espresso in dark sunglasses or talk loudly on mobile phones, while still others sit on footpaths with heads bowed and hands cupped and outstretched seeking any morsel that might come their way. The city is alive in every sense with history, ancient and modern.
The crowds become visible some distance from the Vatican and we are grateful to have a reservation that allows us to slide straight past the ever growing queues. Once inside the throng seems even thicker and it is actually kind of difficult to fully appreciate the untold treasures of the Vatican Museum as the crowd pushes us ever onwards. At one point we move through a room containing numerous contemporary (by Roman standards) art masterpieces - Chagall, Dali etc - but are unable to fully appreciate for fear of being left behind. When we finally reach the Sistine Chapel it is, of course, stupendous in its mastery and scale. Yet still more awaits, St Peters Basilica is almost unimaginable in its size and grandeur and it is a relief to be able to alow down and move freely about in mindful and serene wonder.
Later that afternoon we walk to the Spanish Steps and then our wonderful students are thrilled to have the opportunity to go shopping in Rome's nearby fashion district...keep an eye on those credit card statements!
Some photos for your viewing pleasure...
